Xavier Dolan premiers films for the first time in the U.S.
Though he is only 24 years of age, Xavier Dolan has shown that he is a very talented actor. Now, he can add ’Director’ to his credits. Dolan’s films have been sold in over 20 countries, but it is for the first time that his films, two of them, will be shown in the United States, from June 28 to July 5.
Miami Beach Cinematheque will be showing the films, "J’ai tué ma mère" (I Killed My Mother) and "Laurence Anyways,", both have been nominated for international film festival awards.
Dolan, who is from Montréal, Québec, is also of Egyptian descent, with a schoolteacher mother and an actor and singer father.
The theme for these movies will be Then and Now, and both movies will be shown every day until July 5.
The film "J’ai tué ma mère," is about a heavily strained mother and son relationship that gradually gets worse. The movie was not only nominated for awards, but it also won a few of them, too, including three from the Dr. Fortnight program at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.
"Lawrence Anyways" follows a heterosexual couple who has to face an issue surrounding the gender identity of one of the partners. The setting for this film, also selected to compete in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, is the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Prices range from 8-16 dollars, depending on whether or not one wants to see both movies, the age of the moviegoer(s) and whether or not one is a member of the Miami Beach Cinematheque. "J’ai tué ma mère" is an hour and a half long, and "Lawrence Anyways" is two hours and 40 minutes long. Both movies will have French and English subtitles.
