Francophonie Month : first edition of the « Dis-moi dix mots » contest in Florida

For the first time, in 2013, pupils and college students of South Florida were able to take part in a contest based on the 10 words of the French language and Francophonie Week.

Organized every year around March 20th, which is the International Francophonie Day, the French language and Francophonie Week is a major event for all the word lovers in France, as well as abroad. It gives a wide audience the opportunity to show their attachment to the French language by celebrating its richness and diversity.

The 2013 edition, entitled “Dis-moi dix mots semés au loin”, invited everybody to play and express themselves with these words in either a literary or artistic form. These ten words are chosen every year by numerous francophone partners: France, Belgium, Quebec, Switzerland and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie.

The Cultural Services Department of the Consulate General of France in Miami and of the Consulate General of the Republic of Haiti in Miami, in partnership with the Little Haiti Cultural Center and the Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance, invited the students from the French Heritage Language Program, Toussaint Louverture Elementary School, Oriole Elementary School and Boyd Anderson High School, and those studying French at Miami universities to take part in a local version of the contest. In total, more than 100 students competed in 3 categories (drawing for elementary school, tale for high school and poem for college).

The members of the jury awarded the first three prizes to Athène Vickles from the French Heritage Language Program (drawing category), Didley Dorelus from Boyd Anderson High School (tale category) and Mercedes Ramos from Miami Dade College (poem category).

Friday, April 19th, during the musical event “Big Night in Little Haiti”, organized by the Rhythm Foundation every third Friday of the month at the Little Haiti Cultural Center, the winners were awarded their prizes by the Consul General of France and the Consul General of the Republic of Haiti. The prizes were offered by Air France, Azure College, Pierre Books, Miami Children Museum, Miami Beach Cinematheque and Moonchine Asian Bistro.
