In addition, we will have a COSEE/NSF sponsored event on Saturday evening that is open to the public (with reservation) that will showcase films from the "Beneath the Waves Film Festival" founded by local graduate students from RSMAS.

Other activities will include a special airing of a film by Ted Caplow (Fish Navy Films), special guest speakers, fish throughout the lobby, marine-themed kid-friendly activities, a lion fish cook off (possibly with a special celebrity chef), and much more!

Last year, during his interview Daniel Mercier, the founder of « World Underwater Festival », shared his thoughts on the origins of this event and his reasons for starting it in 2011.

According to Mr. Mercier, he first set up a festival dedicated to the underwater world in order to "guide the public in their discovery of life beneath water surface, to encourage people to practice scuba-diving and protect this underwater world ".

He also added that the goal of this global festival is to raise awareness and love for the underwater world and to change our ancestral behavior: the dumping of our waste into the sea.
