A chapter of the Alliance Française in Tallahassee

JPEGIn November of 2011, the Alliance Française de Tallahassee was accepted as an official chapter of the Alliance Française. Founded in 2006, the organization had been operating under the name Association Française de Tallahassee. Nico Wienders, who is still a member, was the first President. Other founding members were Jackson Sigler and Dan Bensimon, who are also currently members of the Board of Directors.

With over 140 members, the Alliance Française de Tallahassee offers four sessions of French language classes for adults and children each year and an average of 50 students attend classes.

Bi-monthly gatherings at local bistros provide an opportunity for members to speak French, and a French film is shown once a month.

The organization offers cooking classes several times each year, not so much to teach cooking, as to offer an immersion experience in French while cooking and enjoying the results.

Last summer the first immersion trip to France took place in June in the Charente region. The second trip is planned for 2012 in Paris, also in June. Every year we celebrate the Fête de la Musique and the 14th of July French Market. We organize an annual Beaujolais Nouveau dinner.

These events are open to the community.

Last year the Alliance Francophone merged with the Alliance Française and as a result the organization offers an Aimée Cesaire lecture each year.

Support for the Congrès 2012 is currently under way with a fundraising event March 5 which will provide $540 of financial support to two students attending the Congrès in Orlando later in March.

The metropolitan area of Tallahassee has a population of about 370,000. The capital of Florida, it is home to Florida State University, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, Tallahassee Community College and several branches of other colleges and universities. The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory located here is the largest and highest-powered magnet research laboratory in the world.
