French Education in Florida


Introduction: A diversify education offer

Florida proposes a program consisting of a French and American bilingual education known as "International Studies"(IS) in different public schools in the counties of Miami-Dade and Broward.

The following Miami-Dade County schools offer these curricula: Sunset Elementary School,, Coconut Grove Elementary School, Carver Middle School, International Studies Charter High School (ISCHS) and International Studies Preparatory Academy (ISPA).

In Broward County, the International School of Broward (ISB) in Hollywood offers this bilingual education as well.

  • Important: Magnet schools like Sunset Elementary School or G.W. Carver Middle School enforce application deadlines.

Applications must be received before January 15 for the following school year.

1- Day Care and Kindergarten (before the age of 6)

Schooling in the public educational system begins at 6 years old.
Before this age, private Preschool is the only option.

a- Preschool, Kindergarten and Elementary school in French

  • École Franco-américaine de Miami (The French American School of Miami): (Preschool, Kindergarten and Elementary school).

    The program is taught in French; instruction is complemented by 3 to 9 hours per week of English lessons (according to each grade). The school is certified by the French Ministry of Education and by the Florida Kindergarten Council. École Franco-américaine de Miami runs two campuses one in Coral Gables and another one in Miami Shores.

    Ecole Franco-américaine de Miami

  • Lycée franco-américain / International School (Preschool, Kindergarten and Elementary school)

    Lycée Franco-Américain is a private two-way immersion language school from pre-K to 5th grade that offers instruction in French and English. Seven hours, on average, of English lessons are given in addition to French instruction. The school is certified by the French Ministry of Education and by the Florida Kindergarten Council.

b- Preschool and Day Care in English and Spanish

Numerous daycares and preschools are available for toddlers and children understanding English, Spanish or French. The large majority provides daycare during weekdays.
Children between 4 and 5 years old may be enrolled in Pre-K and Kindergarten.

    Kindergarten to 5th Grade. This private school with two campuses, one in Coral Gables and another in Miami Shores is accredited by the French Ministry of Education and by the Florida Kindergarten Council.

Entirely in French, instruction is complemented by an additional 3 to 9 hours per week of English lessons (determined by the grade).

4- High school (French and American programs starting at 9th grade)

  • International Studies Charter High School (ISCHS)

This program continues those of Carver Middle School and International Studies Charter School. It allows students to compete for the “Brevet des collèges” (end of 9th grade).

- 9th grade: classes in French for math, French, history and geography;
- 10th grade: classes in French for math, French, history, geography and Economy
- 11th grade: French for math, French, history, geography, Physics and Chemistry, Economics and Social sciences;
- 12th grade: all of the above and philosophy.

5- « After school » in French

Two not-for-profit organizations, APEM and EFF, provide after-school classes in French. They belong to the FLAM program, which supports the setup of extracurricular initiatives (French classes and other cultural activities) in order to promote the use of the French language.


APEM teaches French language on weekdays after school hours and on Saturdays in the following cities:

6- The French National Center for Distance Schooling, (CNED)

  • The French National Center for Distance Schooling (CNED) offers the option of distance learning as a complete or flexible/partial instruction, from Kindergarten through 12th grade.

7- French Heritage Language-Miami Program

The French Heritage Language Program (FHLP) run by the non-profit French American Cultural Exchange foundation (FACE) is aimed at assisting disadvantaged Francophone youths who are often recent immigrants. The program offers free, for-credit French classes that build on the cultural heritage of students and help them achieve academic success.

9- Societa Dante Alighieri - French Division

The French section offers courses at different levels for adults and children as well as accelerated language trainings and immersion sessions.
Classes will take place at the Società Dante Alighieri in Coral Gables.
